Thug jailed for pub glassing
A 23-YEAR-OLD Quarry Bank man who left a young woman scarred for life when he glassed her in a pub because she spilled beer down his clothes has been jailed for three years.
Judge John Warner at Wolverhampton Crown Court told Philip Gwilt people spoke highly of him and added: "I realise it is every parent's nightmare to have a son or a daughter of previous good character in court on a serius charge.".
But he added, "It is also a nightmare for the girl in this case. She will have a scar on her face for the rest of her life. Your reaction was not deserved - she only spilt your beer down you."
He told Gwilt of Acres Road, Quarry Bank: "If everyone in our pubs and clubs reacted the way you did then there would be mayhem."
Gwilt admitted causing grievous bodily harm - and his defence solicitor Wilbert Harris said Gwilt was full of remorse for his actions.
He said Gwilt was a "caring" person and stressed to the court he was not a man who "disrespected members of the opposite sex."
Mr Harris said alcohol had played a big part in the actions of Gwilt as he unsuccesfully asked the Judge not to deprive him of his liberty.
Sundeep Ali, prosecuting, said the girl had been in the Thorns pub in Thorns Road, Quarry Bank, and she went outside to see if her taxi had arrived.
When she tried to get back into the pub Gwilt put his foot in front of the door to prevent her gaining access despite her repeated protests.
When she finally got back inside the pub, said Miss Ali, he had his pint glass in his hand and, when the door was opened, beer spilled down the front of his clothes.
Gwilt told the girl: "Look at what you have done" before pushing the glass in her face leaving her with one serious cut and a number of minor lacerations.

A soft sentence as usual, 3 years is no where near long enough.
