Mayor of Dudley Councillor David Stanley opening the new unit

THE Mayor of Dudley, Councillor David Stanley, officially opened the Clinical Research Unit at Russells Hall Hospital which will see approximately 100 research studies taking place each year.

The Clinical Research Unit is the hub for many national and local research projects and houses nine consulting rooms, six bedded day-case bay and a hi-tech research laboratory.

The unit has been kitted out with state-of-the-art technology, which has benefited from a £150,000 donation from the Albert Roberts Memorial Fund.

The research facilities will help the Dudley Group of Hospitals Trust add to their extensive portfolio of clinical trials which include cardiology, rheumatology and oncology.

The Trust is also a major contributor to multi-centre national trials which are mostly funded by outside organisations such as the Arthritis Research Campaign, Medical Research Council and Cancer Research UK.

Staff are currently leading one of the world's largest Rheumatoid Arthritis trials, and is the first out of 60 centres in the UK to begin recruiting patients on a five-year trial, which aims to prevent patients suffering heart attacks or strokes.
