Cyclists race in memory of club member
Gerry Hughes

TRIBUTES are set be paid to a man who dedicated himself to a Worcester cycling club today (Saturday).

The St John's Cycling Club will hold its first road race since the death of Gerry Hughes, one of its most valued veteran members.

Mr Hughes, of Hallow, near Worcester, attended his first club meeting in 1945 and years later was named club president in recognition of his constant commitment and sustained enthusiasm.

For almost 10 years the 78-year-old took part in time trials and grass track meetings throughout the Midlands.

In 1954 he cycled to Birmingham at 5.30am to take part in one race, only to be disqualified on the start line due to a technicality with his shirt.

During the 1950s Mr Hughes used his passion for the sport to enthuse others and set about enticing new riders.

The hard work paid off, the club was revived and in 1960 a St John's race was used as the final Olympic qualifier to decide who would compete in Tokyo.

Rob Finch, veteran member of the club, said Mr Hughes would be remembered by members tomorrow. He said: "When I came back to cycling and eventually succeeded Gerry as chairman during the mid-90s, I had little experience of what was involved or was required of a chairman. Gerry always made himself available and offered advice and assistance, which was always appreciated.

"Many don't realise what a rock Gerry was at times during WSJCC history.

"When numbers were down or finances tight, Gerry always managed to keep the club together, riding out the storm, often at his own cost."

Mr Hughes died on Friday, April 25, and left his wife Dorothy.

He was also a member of the Sports Council Drug Testing Squad and received a Gold Medal of Honour for his services to cycling from the Birmingham division of the British Cycling Federation.
